Overall Trainee of the Year – Renee Keir

Renee is employed by Lake Macquarie City Council and trained by Australian Training and Consulting.

Renee knew she wanted to work and gain a qualification at the same time. Finishing her HSC in 2015 she had already worked in 3 jobs in retail and customer service and with aspirations of working in local government the traineeship was for her, the natural choice to make.

A high attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills gained from experience in her previous jobs, has allowed Renee to achieve outstanding results. Regularly achieving assessments that noted she was exceeding expectations across all units.

Her ability to be a role model for other staff and potential trainees was recognised by Lake Macquarie City Council when Renee was asked to participate in a promotional video for the Customer Service Traineeship.

Her excellent achievements are noted by her supervisors and trainers that she is highly motivated and an outstanding achiever. This has opened doors for Renee to further her career in Local Government including a full time role with Lake Macquarie City Council.

Overall Apprentice of the Year – Toby Dorn

Toby is employed by Jetstar and his training organisation is TAFE NSW – New England RTO

Toby joined JETSTAR as an apprentice having already completed an Advanced Diploma of Aviation and already holding a Commercial Pilots licence.

He attended Tamworth TAFE to complete his theory component where he was successful in gaining an exam average of 98.5 % which is the highest scored achieved at Tamworth. In 2016 Toby was voted by his peers as the JETSTAR Apprentice of the Year.

During his apprentice Toby advocated for his fellow apprentices by volunteering to be a member of the apprentice committee. During this time he also volunteered to assist in school career days where his advice on apprenticeships was eagerly accepted. He has proven to be a great mentor to the younger apprentices.

Toby is now a part-time flight instructor has he is keen to pass on his knowledge.

Subsequent to this Toby has now returned to the flying side of the industry with an appointment as a Chief pilot of a charter company
